When you're expecting a baby, you can anticipate A LOT of added expenses that come along with it. A newborn photography session for your babe might be on the list of expenses. I'm going to share five tips and ideas that will allow for more wiggle room in your budget and give you peace of mind so you can concentrate on the most important thing: your baby!
#1 - Baby Shower Registry for the Win
Did you know that you can add a newborn session (or any other kind of session) to your baby shower registry? Yep! Although it isn't always in the budget for one of your friends or family members to cover alone, multiple contributors can pull their money towards the more expensive gifts (some do this for their wedding showers too).
#2 - Swapsies?
Do you have a friend/family member who works in a trade or craft? Make a swap! Some business owners, tradespeople, and craftspeople are open to the idea of trading their services. Do you know someone trying to sell a large piece of furniture? Maybe that piece will go perfect in another's storefront - just ask, it never hurts!
#3 - Payment Plans
If you feel uncomfortable putting higher priced items, like a newborn session, on your registry then payment plans are always an option. Flora and Fawn Photography can break your payments up into smaller amounts spread out over time so that you don't have to compromise on your essentials.
#4 - Buy Secondhand or Used Baby Items
If you're saving up for your newborn session yourself, you can save a lot of money by buying used or secondhand baby items. Check your local St. Vincent De Paul and shop one of their clothing sales where you can grab quality kids clothes, books, toys and other items at extremely discounted prices. I suggest checking Facebook marketplace for any items other parents are looking to sell. Another option is accepting used baby items from your friends and relatives who no longer need them. You can spare your wallet by simply washing your items before use and you'll even help the planet.
#5 - Take the Photos Yourself!
Let's be real...Life happens and sometimes you really can't justify spending the money on newborn photos. And that's okay! Photography isn't really an essential item - it's considered a treat or a luxury for most. Phones in 2023 have impressive camera capabilities and would make a good substitute in a crunch. If you have a digital camera and access to YouTube you can take simple, lovely photos of your newborn babe yourself.
Safety Disclaimer: If you are not a professional newborn photographer, you should stick to non-posed photos. This means that some poses, such as 'froggy' or 'chin on hands', must be done properly to ensure baby's safety, and professional newborn photographers are trained and familiar with safe posing practices.
A few suggestions for a great image at home:
Swaddle your baby and place them in their crib
Take detail shots: think toes, facial features, etc.
Use a blanket or a tablecloth as a backdrop
